For all skin types: Neroli Hydrosol

More than just Calming

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, as I’ve been down with intestinal infection, very sadly. While recuperating, I discovered a few properties of the Neroli hydrosol that I had, which makes it so wonderful!

Most people know this hydrosol only as one with pleasant scent and with a calming nature. But guess what? There are more to it than you know!

Regulates and Hydrates

It is great for oily skin as it regulates oiliness. Neroli hydrosol can be mixed with other hydrosols for different effects: with Rose hydrosol for dry and mature skin; with Witch Hazel to clear acne and blemished skin, especially if the skin lacks moisture. In fact, Neroli hydrosol can reduce the appearance of fragile or broken capillaries and varicose veins as well with regular usage.

Powerful Astringent

Enlarged pores are often results of overactive oil glands. While regulating the sebum production, the hydrosol effectively minimises pores, making skin look smoother. This property of the Neroli hydrosol is heightened when Witch Hazel hydrosol – another strong astringent – is added.

Carminative

Because of the intestinal infection that I was down with, symptoms such as flatulence and nausea were easily eased with this wonder hydrosol. I massaged the hydrosol on the tummy to relieve flatulence; as well as from the neck all the way down to the chest, in order to ease the nausea I was suffering from.

Eases Muscle Aches

Another use that I had for Neroli hydrosol was for the aches I get in the thighs, especially after shopping trips.

Multi purposes

Intrigued by the many usages of this hydrosol, I did a quick search and found all these amazing properties of it! More of the uses can found here.

  • Antidepressant – alleviates depression
  • Antiseptic – destroys microbes and prevents their development
  • Antispasmodic – prevents or relieves spasms, convulsions
  • Antitoxic – helps counteract effects of bacterial toxins
  • Aphrodisiac – an agent which is used to increase sexual desire
  • Carminative – relieves flatulence, eases abdominal bloating
  • Cicatrisant – helps wounds to heal
  • Deodorant – to inhibit the growth of bacteria which cause odors
  • Febrifuge – combats fever
  • Sedative – reduces nervous tension, stress and anxiety
  • Stomachic – good for the stomach, gastric tonic, digestive aid
  • Tonic – invigorates, refreshes and restores body functions

Scent needs getting used to

I must admit that while all sites claim that the scent of the Neroli hydrosol is uplifting, it does not seem so to me. In fact, it has the musky smell that takes me some getting used to.

Conclusion

I will definitely repurchase this! You may get this from Yours Essentially or from Whoopeekiddies.

Home Remedy: Clove Powder for Acne

Clove is used to treat skin conditions because of its antibacterial properties. Both clove and its powder contain salicylic acid, which gently exfoliates skin to unclog pores.

Ingredients

  1. 2 teaspoon of clove powder
  2. 1 teaspoon of  honey

Remedy:

  1. Mix the 2 ingredients together to achieve a paste-like consistency. The end result should not be too fluid as it may drip.
  2. Apply the paste on blemishes immediately.
  3. For better results, store the paste in the fridge overnight and apply the next day.
  4. Paste can be used on the blemishes twice daily. Leave paste on the blemish for at least 30 minutes each time, or until paste dries.
  5. Paste does not sting due to the honey present. After washing off the paste, skin will feel a slight tingling, refreshing sensation.
  6. Add 2-3 drops of mint juice (and add more clove powder as required to make a thick paste) to minimise redness.

Personally, I observe better results after the paste has been stored in the fridge overnight. The new acne disappears in a couple of days, while the old ones flatten, but retain their redness. I have yet to try the mint juice version, because I have not found it.

Credits to Leon for the recipe.

Review: Lavera Neutral Range

The Neutral range by Lavera is the most expensive amongst all the others. Neutral is specially formulated for sensitive skin. Being a very gentle and unscented range, it’s suitable for individuals for allergies and even eczema.

Certified Natural, Environmentally Friendly and Cruelty Free

Lavera adheres to the strict guidelines for the Certified Natural Cosmetics set by BDIH in Germany, which is the toughest certification process for natural and organic products. In addition, Lavera was ranked #1 in 2008, in a study on safe cosmetics conducted by an influential magazine in Germany. Read more about Lavera here.

Neutral Cleansing Gel

Features: All-natural ingredients, no harsh chemicals, free from parabens and the harmful SLS.

Packaging: Tube with flick-open cap.

Texture: A very light gel, does not foam.

Smell: Unscented.

Effects: Leaves skin feeling clean and not tight.

Recommendations: For all skin types, from dry to oily, from normal to sensitive skin.

Ingredients: Water, Grain Alcohol, Sodium Lactate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Glycerin, Chondrus Crispus, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate

Please take note that Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is a safe, skin-friendly cleansing agent derived from coconut and palm oils.

Other comments:

This cleanser is mild and does not irritate my already-blemished skin. However, because this is in the form of a very light gel, the cleanser cannot remove make-up completely.

In fact, prior to using the cleansing gel, I had already removed most of the make-up (ie, BB cream only) using an awesome cleansing water (Mandom Cleansing Express Lotion). Yet the cleansing gel was still unable to remove the residual.

On the contrary, this product is perfectly gentle enough as a daily day cleanser, or for days when no make-up is put on.

Only slightly more than a pea-sized amount is needed to clean my face each time, but any squeeze of the tube will dispense an amount greater than needed. Perhaps I need more practice to squeeze out the right amount and avoid wastage.

Neutral Facial Fluid

Features:

  1. Organic Evening Primrose, Sweet Almond Oil & Sea Buckthorn, which are rich in Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), provide anti-inflammatory soothing action.
  2. Jojoba seed oil heals and calms dry, irritated skin.
  3. Shorea Butter restores elasticity to dry, stressed skin.
  4. Licorice Root extract is highly anti-inflammatory. At the same time, it lends brightening and clarifying benefits to tender tissues.

Packaging: Tube with screw-top cap.

Texture: Light, lotion-like, non-greasy.

Smell: Unpleasant, but bearable. Dissipates very fast upon application.

Effects: Hydrates well as a day cream.

Recommendations: For normal to sensitive skin types and for combination to oily skin types.

Ingredients: Water, Olive Oil*, Grain Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Tricaprylin, Squalane, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Sweet Almond Oil*, Shorea Butter, Jojoba Oil*, Evening Primrose Oil*, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Vitamin E Acetate, Shea Butter, Xanthan Gum, Irish Moss, Lysolecithin, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Licorice Root Extract, Lecithin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Vitamin E, Rapeseed Sterols, Vitamin C Ester, Vitamin C

* ingredients are from certified organic agriculture

Other Comments:

The fluid moisturises well enough as a day cream, but when used alone as a night cream, I woke up to an oily T-zone. The Neutral range has a Face Cream to be used for this purpose, but as I’ve not found it in local shops, I’m unable to try it.

Easily absorbed because of the light texture, it’s ideal for combination to oily skin as it hydrates without clogging pores. However, the texture may be too light for those with dry skin.

Like the cleansing gel, only a pea-sized amount is needed to moisturise the whole face. Unfortunately, wastage is hard to avoid as product is always dispensed more than required, due to the screw-top cap design.

Overall

The Neutral range has left no adverse effects and the Cleansing gel is my current HG cleanser. At $7 each, I’d say go for it! But, when the price goes back to the usual range of $30 – $48 each, I just might not repurchase.
